I think Obama has like....A ten point lead.

So yeah unless he does something really bad between now and the vote I'd say the Democrats have this one.

according to any dictionary, free is "not under the control or in the power of another."

how can it be a free world when we have these so called leaders dictating on us?
i think they should be called that for shits and giggles considering we haven't been going very far with the prime ministers and presidents that we have at the moment.

Hey I didn't say I considered the position as such.

Oh and on your point about being free I'll throw down a quote from my good friend Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

"None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who
falsely believe they are free."

Unfortunately yes in the last century the ideals of "freedom" and "liberty" have been used to propagate a number of useless causes, wars being in that category too. Oh and that little definition you gave there is a prime example of anarchy.
What is it to be free, anyway? Free to do what you want, say what you want, write what you want etc...Well technically we don't even have most of these. Take saying what you want, for example, can you really say ANYTHING you want? No, because you, not someone else, prevent yourself from doing this. You do this because of others, now these others might not be imposing anything onto you physically, but their mere existence is enough for you to cut short your own freedom. Now, think what would happen if we did actually become entirely free. Exactly, you can't because that would be impossible without destroying centuries of human cultural taboos, ethics, morals and guidelines. Sure, right at this very moment you have the physical freedom to go out and commit a crime, but rest assured you probably wont have many more of those for a while.

Anyway, I don't think anyone can doubt the massive amount of political power the U.S. head of state office holds with which to manipulate the rest of the world, so yes this election is going to effect us all a fair bit.

Post  milk on Thu Oct 30, 2008 1:52 pm

i see what you mean, and i agree that we couldn't have a world where people ran around recklessly on killing sprees and what not.
how can 'i' be preventing myself from speaking out, in terms of free speech. So many people do it everyday, and get put into jail because of it. Do they not have the freedom to at least express themselves without some form of authority stopping it?

LOL this would be so much easier if i was actually interested in history/politics and so on.
i'd then probably have a better idea of what i was talking about. Razz

My point about expression is that we prevent ourselves from exercising complete freedom of speech, admittedly some more than others but everyone to a certain extent.

Saying anything and everything that we want or would like to say. Which of course would be impossible.

well, if someone could guarantee me that i would not get killed if i stood in a circle of "people i hate" and told them i though they were dirty, then i would.

unless thats what you're talking about when you say we are prevented.

Yes, we stop ourselves from saying something that would put us in a bad position with those around us.

But anyway, we've gone way off-topic here so I'll stop.
